With respect to GNOME not starting, you didn't describe *how* you couldn't get GNOME to work; what does it do? If it falls back to the login, then that's a known case and discussed in detail on the nvidia-mailing list, only OpenSolaris remains agnostic. (It dies 100% at change of resolution.)
