Yes the cd must be booted to start. Go to the device detection tool and see if any hardware installed on your computer has drivers on the cd. If not you can still use a third party driver. You will have to have a blank primary partition or an empty available harddrive to do install. You need to install it to harddrive to be able to write files and get full updates.
