Because the PC BIOS is idiotic.

This whole problem is because of the way the PC BIOS works.  The fact that
the PC BIOS works at all is more luck than anything else.

Why can't we have OBP on PCs?  I'm sure (wishful thinking here) that it is
possible to write a BIOS call emulation layer in forth.
