jabrewer: yeah definitely don't trust the wonders of the IDE standards :) But the thing is I get trouble even -without- a HDD attached. re: the optical drives, I've tried a new Lite-On DVD-ROM (that I've used with another Sol 10 x86 box) and the 2001-era CD-ROM. But I will try some combos again, with and without CSL set, etc. And what's more, this board only has -one- EIDE channel; it's a bit of an odd duck. More of a server board, if I recall correctly.
