in grub use the e key to edit on the kernel line, i.e:
kernel$ /platform/i86pc/multiboot -B $ZFS-BOOTFS -vk
if it crashes:

> $C

and you can try 
kernel$ /platform/i86pc/multiboot -B $ZFS-BOOTFS -vkd
