Ok, so I booted with options -kdv and it got up to loading and installing
module id's 23 and 24, called rootnex and iommulib. The lines after that were:
root nexus = i86pc
Start to check dmar related boot options
Start to create iommu state structures
dmar0,0 state structure created
Start to collect the reserved memory
Start to prepare identity map for rmrr
This is where it stops.
I noticed some hp pavillions (mine's a compaq) experienced kernel panics due
to the audiohd driver. So I tried booting with it disabled but that didn't help
either.
