The builtin Mac remote desktop does not play well with modern VNC
servers (or clients, for that matter). Going into the Mac running its native
mode would I think require explicitly using hextile compression only.
And I think it tries to do (or accept) something strange wrt authentication,
too.

>From a Mac, the free "Chicken of the VNC" viewer works well with non-Mac
VNC servers. And there's an alternative VNC server for the Mac that works
better with non-Mac clients; you just have to disable the native remote desktop
functionality to use it.

I _think_ I'm using the blastwave Xvnc and vncviewer on my Sun, but I wouldn't
swear to that, and I can't check just now. (One of the viewers worked better
with the Mac's native server than others, in terms of being able to specify
encodings and such that would work.)

AFAIK, on the Sun there's a separate Xvnc server, but the VNC extensions for
Xorg aren't available on OpenSolaris (yet or ever?), which means one can
access a separate session on the Sun (if one has set up dtlogin or gdm or
whatever to run Xvnc as well as Xorg or Xsun), but one cannot take remote
control of an already running local session.

(Mac OS X 10.5.6 on a Core 2 Duo (2GHz) Mac Mini, with "Chicken of the VNC"
client; Solaris SXCE snv_97 on a Sun Blade 2000; not sure what version of the
Xvnc server or vncviewer client on the Sun, nor what version (but not the
native one) of the VNC server on the Mac, for that matter.)

For the builtin Mac client, an additional problem (if you wanted full
functionality like detection in the Finder network view) would be that the
Solaris box wouldn't be doing Bonjour (MDNS) advertising of the VNC service.
That might be possible using static configuration files
(see http://linux.die.net/man/5/avahi.service - why is the man page for that
missing on OpenSolaris?), but for VNC it wouldn't help since the native Mac
viewer may (as already mentioned) not work that well with non-Mac servers.
(Nevertheless, I may have sample files for advertising VNC, netatalk, or CIFS
shares lying around somewhere; again, I can't check right now.)
