I think that's because you've downloaded the wrong file. There should be something like 'pkg' in the file name. This weekend I installed realplayer with the Sun download on OpenSolaris and I simply typed 'packadd -d filename'. The tar file is probably if you want to install differently. With 'pkgadd' it selects the right installation location. This message posted from opensolaris.org
