Hi jabrewer, thanks for the note.

Well, the IDE config in the BIOS is fairly limited. Basically it can either be 
"Primary" or "Disabled"  :-)  I guess worst case, I could try no CD/DVD-ROM at 
all and do a pxe boot install.  

re: older HDD, the one I'm using is a standard IDE Seagate that's a few years 
old (there is a separate SATA interface on the board) but I get the failure 
even with the HDD completely removed.  as for the older CD-ROM drive I tried, 
it's from 2001  :-)

The annoying thing is, I installed Debian 4.0r1 without a hitch from a CD-ROM.  
And while I respect Debian, I really don't want to run it on this box  ;-)
