Having the chatbar always taking focus would be just as much a disaster for
me as it seems it is for you to have it releasing focus so much...
Although, for me it seems to be perfect the way it is, as I haven't been
fighting it in 2.0: it seems to work the way my mind expects it to.

If there seems to be an issue, then it sounds like a debug setting is in
order. If enough people seem interested, that can be later exposed in the
UI somewhere.

Going by the last "by country" statistics that were released 9% of the SL
population lives in a country where "WASD" is meaningless (AZERTY keyboard
layout).

So regardless of how the other 90% is laid out that particular change in 2.0
is going to annoy at least the 1 in 10 for who WASD never worked in the
first place which seems more than enough to make it a clearly visible option
and not something that's hidden away in an obscure debug setting noone will
ever know about.

As an aside, hitting <return> to get focus to the chat bar just isn't
intuitive because it's tied to the "send what I've typed" action. If I'm
halfway through typing something and something else in the UI needs
attention it feels like a terribly unnatural thing to hit <return> to go
back to typing because you'd expect <return> to instead send what you were
busy typing before. Or if you finished typing it now takes 2 <return>'s all
of a sudden to actually send it.

The UI also doesn't give any hints for those who don't know: instead of
"Click here to chat" it should say "Press return to start chatting". People
do realize that you click in a text box before typing in it while having to
hit <return> to give it focus is non-standard.
