They prepend version number with egcs-. E.g., gcc --version in my place
returns egcs-2.91.66. I currently have egcs-1.1.2 release installed. But
this is about to change. As Cygnus is officially assigned to maintain
gcc now, upcoming egcs release will claim itself as 2.95, i.e. without
egcs- prefix (as far as I understand).

Why? Numbering after egcs- prefix is consistent with previous gnu
releases. 2.91 is bigger than 2.8:-) It simply has to strip egcs- prefix
whenever it's present.
