Thanks for the feedback. Both of these suggestions seem so obvious that I now wonder why I didn't think of them.
 
These does lead to one obvious question:
 
Should I do the work and resubmit my patches for HMAC processing and doing all digesting through the EVP layer against 0.9.7 or has someone already done this work?

Well in general you should supply patches against the current
development version of OpenSSL. The actual changes from 0.9.6a and
0.9.7-dev are considerable and whole sections of the library have been
rewritten.

In general its a good idea to mention any changes or areas you think
need changing in openssl-dev first. Someone may be already working on
the changes anyway and not committed them yet.
