i'm honestly not the one to be poring over openssl's code -- as has been
pointed out to me my this list's members quite awhile ago.

just trying to be generally helpful by describing/asking about an issue
which i see that's just a bit 'deeper' than usual user fare ...

because, a while ago, in order to 'solve' a downstream problem with
ssl-in-subversion and gmp-in-neon-precursor-to-subversion i was
specifically TOLD to use it.

at that time, it fixed THAT problem.

sorry, not all obvious to me.

at the moment, i've simply reconfig'd openssl w/:

        zlib

rather than:

        zlib-dynamic

that fixes the TLS problem ...

thought it still leaves some error messages on engine check, as i've
reported previously.

in the end, i'm loooking for a functional out-of-the-box openssl, not
one that i've hacked -- with good advice offered -- to make work.

if/when y'all decide to validate a fix and move into the src tree, then
that'll be grand!

thanks for all the help!
