In the US there are different kinds of patents good for different
lengths of time, but most are design patents good for 17 years... hence
RSA's expiry is 20 Sep 2000, (587 days).  My bet is that "Y2K problem"
means something else at RSA than it does to the rest of us.

Perhaps Ed looked at the filing date in 1977?  In any case, IBM's patent
search site is a great resource, as long as you know the patent number
you're looking for.
