Perhaps when the OP says "certificate", he is misusing the term-of-art
to mean something else. Maybe a PKCS12 container that holds both the
cert and the private key... 

Sadly many people new to the field don't readily understand the different
roles that certificates, public and private keys play in public-key
cryptography.
