After that message I downloaded 0.9.7h and it had the bad link, missing
file as well, so went down a minor and grabbed 0.9.6h, which installed
smooth using a tweaked linux-elf, and passed the tests (on a P///).
Still not sure if those hand tweaked object files will work on a
386/486.

bash-2.04 is missing some of the facilities of 2.05, and in the chroot
environment I'm using the host's 2.4 kernel instead of 2.2.
