Looks like this is an unresolved bug in config where the fix is either to run 
as an unprivileged user or comment out the offending code (in this case lines 
793, 794, and 795 or just look for "-o /dev/null").  This post goes into

Bottom line is running config as root on Solaris destroys /dev/null.

Just a guess, but "Can't open /dev/null: No such file or directory" could be 
causing utter confusion. That sounds like a pretty screwed-up system. v5.8.8 is 
fine for the perl, assuming it's on your path.
