There are trill signs with both spellings. Presumably for sligtly
different contexts. Even having lived here basically my whole life I'm
not sure if there's a consistent distinction except the legal entity
that is the town is always with a y

I'd second Providnece and Penobscott as 'close enough'.  I'm actually
partial to Providence...
