hi, have a look at the software-RAID HOWTO (www.google.com) at the beginning, the author give some tips (and links ???) about ide hot plugging ... what I remember is only that it is more risky than with an scsi sub-system ... the thing is that if you remove somehow the dvd drive, you need to force the system to re-scan the ide bus the get proper access to your hard drive.
