My understanding (from research a few years ago) is that the drives with a region set will (in firmware) check the region of dvds. You can stop this problem by flashing the drive updated firmware. I got most of the info from this site: http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php But I did the research when using Win/XP and haven't checked it under Linux.
