I have looked at the other posts. This is a problematic area, as some
who started of with PSION 3, I would be lost without a handheld device
of some sort.

If you need something to co-ordinate e-Mail, contacts and calendar,
browse documents and spreadsheets. There is a choice really is between
PDA and Smartphone.

The former is now a static marketplace, and I would suggest following if
only if there is a need to use a mobile application for data collection
or some other specialised activity. Synchronisation between the Windows
and the PDA world not exactly brilliant, even with Windows OS based
devices. Between Linux and the PDA world it can be pretty dire. Linux
based PDAs have mainly been launched in the far East, and are rarely
supported in the West. Unless you really want to wrestle with
Japanese/Korean/Chinese documentation I would avoid. The Nokia tablets
are available more generally (I include al link to the latest the N800
at the bottom).

The latter is especially useful when you are away from base. Have most
of the functionality of a PDA. There is not room here to document all of
the symbian Sony Ericsson Devices (avoid the P990) and Nokia phones.
These all support something called SyncML, at the moment I have just
completed installion of funambol, which supports SyncML (and hopefully
by the end of today I will have this configured to sync with my 9500).
There is a less feature PHP based SymcML project around as well. The bad
news for KMail users is that connectors exist for Thunderbird/Sunbird
and Evolution for funambol but not for KMail.

There has also been some advance in the Linux Smartphone front (see
below)...
