Well, as I mentioned earlier in the thread, this is the same hardware
that worked fine under Fedora (without resorting to the saned approach
you refer to below).
I don't know if that is your case, but that's why I asked what type of
scanner you have and how is it connected. I think it is usb, isn't it?

Yes, but it's beginning to look as if I don't have any other choice
