Well just to complete the picture I have just installed Kubuntu 7.10 i386 (kubuntu desktop is a very quick install) and the nvidia driver works perfectly. glxgears is running at 10000 fps. So the AMD - 7600GT 64bit nvidia driver on both Kubuntu 7.10 x64 and Suse 10.3 x64 does not work.
