Because I had problems, I did a little hunting for a solution, and I did
find a number of people reporting similar issues to those I was
experiencing, but no solutions.

I think you right that there is a hardware element in this issue.

When K3b has worked for me it worked very well, when it hasn't the
experience has been very frustrating, not least because the error
reporting was very poor...
