This requires that packet writing be enabled and results can vary with
drive and media.

However, the short answer is it is not a good idea to directly write to
 optical media this way. Though manufacturers quote values that you get
away with 1000s of writes on a CD/RW, the practical answer seems to be
more in the 100s of writes. The CD will probably fail quite quickly.

An alternative that might be useful is to set up a virtual mount to an
image and only burn the image when you finished with it. At the moment I
know of no tool (with the possible exception of K3b) can set up and
manage such a configuration.

I have no experience of using this kind of mount, others may be able to
help with this aspect. I have a feeling a daemon to setup and manage
this kind of virtually mounted CD/DVD image might be rather useful if it
does not exist already.
