I would get any thinkpad model that you felt was within your budget. There are no other laptop manufacturers out there IMHO.
FYI, there are quite a many ebay stores that sell thinkpads still sealed in the box but are a few models out, for dirt cheap. most still have 3 year warranty. I've come across sealed box T42's for 460 bucks. Just wanted my .02 out there! Good luck....
