It definitely isn't a stupid question at all as there is no obvious piece of info on opensuse.org, the installed help center etc. It's a shame because it really is a rather neat 2-step process: Open Yast, go to "Software", choose "Online update configuration". This will add the online update repository to your existing repositories. After that still in "Software" choose "Online update" which will check for available patches etc. Might be that the first available patch is for the online update module itself. Go along with it and in the next round you will get to see and review all other available updates. You can select/deselect these and again go along with it. Done. Something along these lines really needs to go up front somewhere in the initial user documentation on opensuse.org and the installed help center.
