Hani,
Let's stop with the "we're conservative folks" talk. "We" aren't
anything. "You" are. Unless you are speaking for specific people (please
list them), you are only speaking for yourself.

As are you, we all speak for ourselves. I used 'we' to denote other people who have said pretty much what I said, many in private emails. Not everyone likes voicing negative opinions, and most polite people will (rightfully) choose to say nothing than to say something negative.

I know there are users like Rickard and Wayland that have opinions on
this and I'm eager to hear from them. This is because you (admittedly)
have a biased opinion of 2.x, which is unfortunate since you've taken
over as the maintainer of the 1.x codebase. Because you are biased
against 2.x and are the maintainer of 1.x, you are in serious danger of
jeopardizing the user experience of both projects, as well as the
projects themselves. Until I hear from other people, I'm going to
translate whenever you say the word "we" on this issue as "I".

Yep, go for it.

If we can't come to some agreement, it might be necessary for you to
step down from actively working on the 1.x version due to conflict of
interest: your bias vs. the project goals.

Huh? I seem to have missed a few steps here. Firstly, Dick is the official maintainer of ww1.4. I just help out with the boring stuff. Secondly, you seem to be implying that 'the project goals' are whatever you happen to want. I have no financial interest in any version of webwork's failure or success. I don't gain or lose anything either way. I suspect most users are in the same boat. You're probably the only person who would be traumatised and distraught at the prospect of ww1.x living a happy and full life. If a majority of 1.4 users say 'yep, ditch it, nobody cares' to me, then that'd be a whole other issue. So barring some clarification on exactly what you meant, I'll treat your call for me to 'step down' from 1.x about as seriously as you'd treat a request from me for you to 'step down' from 2.x.

I, as do all WebWork users of
bother versions, need a vote of confidence from you that 2.x is where
future development will take place. Otherwise, as Wayland said, let's
stop pretending and give the projects different names (I find that this
should be an absolute last resort, as I provided extensive compatibility
support).

That'd be fine by me. XWebWork? WebworkX?
