(1) cold calling is not spam. It takes a human being and therefore it is
relatively expensive and therefore it needs to be more restrained and
better targeted than spam, which is inherently a matter of indiscriminate
broadcast, a true social evil. I *wish* I only received as much spam as I
receive junk mail....
(2) Mr. Velander's company address is in his signature and therefore it is
shown with his posts in the archives of this list, which are web
accessible. Yahoogroups will restrict access to the *from* address, but if
it is in the signature, the address is kept, how else could it be?
I don't recall if the Techserv archive conceals user addresses but it, too,
will keep an address in the text.
It is really easy to scan archives for "@" to glean e-mail addresses and,
in this case, the company name, mailing address, fax, and direct phone
number are conveniently there.
I don't take offense at cold calls because taking offense is much more
burden than simply letting it pass, and, besides, it is rude and I too make
cold calls in selling design services. Only very rarely has anyone seemed
to be upset that I was calling them. If the company name and phone number
are published, they are fair game.
As to genuine spam, however, perhaps the spammers are lucky I can't reach
them. Certainly I will support civil and perhaps even criminal penalties
for spamming.
