... maintaining settings and without - not working.
It manifests itself in a lack of boot after the update - probably stop
start because of the entry in partial mode starting with the need to
manually confirm whether to start on, or go into repair mode (I do not
have a serial cable to check it out - recently, about dozens of revision
ago, or so).
