OK, it wasn't the root password change, it was the fact that sudo was installed and nagios was not part of a sudoers group that had "NOPASSWD" set. After I changed that, the transfer worked. The installation did still give another error though:
19:21:12 loadEventStateSlave, Couldn't open file /usr/local/nagios/nmis/var/moni01.XXX_event.dat: No such file or directory loadEventStateSlave, can't lock filename: Bad file descriptor at /usr/local/nagios/nmis/bin/../lib/NMIS.pm line 699. loadEventStateSlave, can't close filename: Bad file descriptor at /usr/local/nagios/nmis/bin/../lib/NMIS.pm line 732. Having a look in /usr/local/nagios/nmis/var/ I've seen that these .dat files are empty files (at least for my system). So I just "touched" the file and chowned it to nagios.nagios, re-ran apt-get update to get it working. Thanks guys for creating the upgrade scripts in such a way that I can run it 10 times without breaking something. At least I hope I didn't break anything ;-) Hope my story might be of help for someone else... -- cheers, arthur
