Well, In my installation, the master server runs in VMware (but I installed it myself, didn't use the prefab VM). All service checks are done by slave servers, which are physical servers around the world.
I don't use a separate server for the database, everything is on a single virtual machine. Checking 247 systems and 1302 services with 9 slave servers, and that goes very well.
