update: if I su - to the nagios user and run it like this:

nag...@nagios:/$ /usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios /usr/local/nagios/etc/nagios.cfg

then it starts and I can check the services on the web ui. But obviously
as soon as I close the terminal it dies :(

Any ideas?
