Work experience plus certification is the best combination. Certification is no different from being a doctor. You need to pass exams to be a doctor too (you need internship to go as well, of course). As for naming famous Oracle authors, I don't think this is a valid gauge of your capacity as a DBA. I know some people well versed in Computer Engineering concepts (from 'great' authors) but can't code.
