John,

We did an eval on Cognos Query about 6 months ago. Decided against it, even
though we use their Power Play and SQR products already. Reasons:

    1) to much stuff to install on the server. Their install puts 6 to 8
services onto a Windows server for some of their "advanced" features that we
can't use.

    2) Administration is a nightmare. You have to bounce the server to add a
user. Like I'm going to do that in the middle of the day!

    3) The metadata layer was an admin nightmare. Tracing problems is even
worse.

    4) Crashed way too easily.

    5) Way to expensive.

    6) Their sales person was a pain, see above.

    7) And in the end the end users did not like it.

On the other hand you probably need something to allow smooth data access.
Try Brio instead. Simple to install, simpler to administer, cheaper, and IMHO
more reliable.

Anybody have any experience with "Cognos"? We've got a bhb that thinks its
the solution for giving every end user access to the raw data
(groan...loudly!)... I've argued every which-a-way against the concept, now
I have to fight the specifics....

HELP!
