We have used names for about 7 years or so, starting with 7.3. We have 400+ databases that everyone (around 6000 clients from all over the U.S.) connects to via names. We are running one names database (hotcopied to DR every night) and 4 names servers. Names is fast - it cahces all of the entries and refreshes from the repository db on a specified interval (don't remember if we set that or if it is non-modifiable). We still use the old 16-bit netman client left over from 7.3. Easy to admin - no more fidling with tnsnames.ora & listener.ora files. We change/add/delete entries, tell netman to regenerate the files & names definitions, then force a reload of the names servers & ftp the new listener file to the affected database server. I don't even remember the last time I had to manually munge a listener file...
As for the LDAP stuff, we are currently working on it to acheive the single-signon stuff (as well as going away from names since Oracle says it won't be supported soon). Integrating OID into legacy applications as well as other third-party LDAP software (we have decided to standardize on e-directory) is an absolute flipping nightmare. It seems every vendor has decided that their LDAP solution is the best one and they pretty much doesn't play at all with anyone else's.
