I guess "how important" depends on what type of DBA role you are filling.
If it's a "system" type DBA role where your only real task is to keep the
database running and perform some basic backup / recovery type work then
understanding the intricacies of table relationships isn't very important.

If your role includes understanding table relationships, perhaps supporting
development of the application sitting on the database, perhaps generating
reports from the data, helping users write ad-hoc queries, etc then a good
data modelling tool becomes essential... Unless of course there is already
a data architect performing this role for you!

Where I am currently the tool of choice is Rational Rose. This was chosen
largely because the application is OO based and Rational is a very good OO
modelling tool. In my opinion though the data modelling side of the
product leaves a lot to be desired. A couple of examples: The product
cannot define a foreign key on an existing column without using a
semi-official plugin. The product cannot reverse engineer UNIQUE indexes
from Oracle 8i databases. These are both what I would consider fundamental
requirements of a data modelling tool. In defence we are using version
2002 on an NT platform - perhaps things are better in the latest release.
The last person to work on our model then brought the data across to Visio
to produce a much cleaner diagram but I have no idea if this was a trivial
or complex exercise.

Previously I had used ERwin and my memories of it are much better although
I believe it's not the cheapest data modelling tool in existence. I think
even the latest version of TOAD can build data model diagrams.

Regards,
      Mark.
