Ok, you can try any of these possibilities. First, try using the cheat code knoppix alsa when first booting up the cd. It seems to work better than OSS for the integrated sound devices.
Second, try flite. I use this instead of the larger, slower, more unwieldy festival. It seems to provide good quality speech for me even at the fast rates at which I tend to use my voice synthesizer. If this doesn't work, you might want to try either the installable dectalk synthesizer which has been mentioned several times on this list, or an external synthesizer. I thoroughly enjoy Oralux, and currently work with the development team. I hope that you will be a ble to get yours going and you soon will see how enjoyable it is to have an almost completely configured Linux install ready to go either from the cd or with a quick install on a hard drive partition.
