Most people would be aware of the Southeby's auction at the weekend of 100 seedlings of the rare Wollemi Pine. The 100 seedlings sold for a total of $1,059,000 AUD. These plants are considered ancient, rare, threatened and unique but how do they measure up against orchids. It seems they do very well but probably because they have a horticultural and commercial value, unlike most Australian threatened orchid species and more particularly terrestrial species. It seems the terrestrial species because of their partial and sometimes total reliance on mycorrhiza are easily forgotten/bulldozed on the odd occasion when conservation is mentioned. We should remind ourselves constantly that not everything must have a monetary value to be worth something.
