"the Orchid Society experienced destruction to its gardens and greenhouses
worse than last year's, officials said.

Hurricane Wilma took out many new plants, and several established and rare
trees were uprooted. Some, including a 65-foot silver-bell tree and a
40-foot soapberry tree, may not make it. Other large trees fell and crushed
plantings, parts of a perimeter fence and other garden features.

"There is certainly no `attraction' for visitors to come see right now,"
the organization's Web site reports, "but we're working ... on that quandary."

After Frances and Jeanne last year, one of every four trees was injured and
thousands of orchid plantings were swept away, which made the gardens even
more vulnerable this season, officials said.

The Orchid Society is closed for at least a month, according to its Web site."
