The only thing a forum can't do out of the box that Google Groups does is
the ability to answer directly in an email to the thread. I actually think
it is good forums don't have that feature. I work a lot with Google Groups
and I don't know how many threads I've seen started by an errant reply,
because the reply didn't get properly added to a thread. The MongoDB user
group is full of such "lost children" replies, mainly because the MongoDB
team use the email reply feature often.

In a forum, you have all of the history in one place. You will also get
notifications sent to you by email, if you want them. And in a forum, you
will even get updates via an activity feed.

God only knows why Google hasn't connected Groups to Google+ notifications.
Geez, that would improve activity in Groups immensely. I hope they actually
never figure that one out for the sake of online communities, which is a
market I've been working in for 14 years.

I also agree the other support channels shouldn't be closed. Even this
group. They should just be user to user channels. The "home community"
should be where the ODB team are prevalent and I would put my hand in a
fire, having a central forum as part of the community experience would make
their support work much, much more valuable.
