Hey Matt:

Good stuff!

Just a few comments:

I suppose you would also integrate this into the c3.conf file such that different node group will have their own individual aliases - probably

Actually, I'd just imagined cexec firing off the scripts. I also figured groupnames would be easier to use on the command lines than MySQL keys. There a reason c3 should know the Node Group groupnames and Membership Lists?

can fix the bug where the c3.conf gets blown away after post_install is run if the user has made some modifications to it.

And a working return value for detecting nodes barfing on sync would be a nice addition to.

How does this work with the new Install/Uninstall Package for v3.0? I remember that it only worked with single images, with node groups being introduced, would that mean that packages can be maintained for multiple images?

Forgot to mention, Jeff and I were chatting a bit about how the nodes would have access to the package files, and I think we pretty much settled on an HTTP server. We're none too fond of NFS after our session of "Hacking NFS for Fun and Profit" as SC03. No reason the OSCAR packages can't be in the same HTTP store as the auxilliary packages, though perhaps wrapped up in tarballs so a single GET will get the whole OSCAR package. Plus, HTTP is designed for rapid fire requests, which NFS will tend to gag on. After the package is transferred to the node, it's just a single image install. The deltas aren't packages, but lists of package names (and other info). The installs (except for the building of the Golden Image) are all single image installs, and each GI is built in isolation from any other. I think I addressed your point, maybe not.

I think our cluster infrastructure would definitely benefit from this new feature as we currently have multiple 'groups' (mostly by architecture/type) in the same oscar cluster. Would be useful for

Anyone think they'll live to see a mixed PPC/Opteron/IA64/IA32/Sparc/ MIPS/StrongARM cluster operating in something that can reasonably be described as a coherent manner? Me neither, but it'd be really cool.

setting packages up like Ganglia.
