os_ver:
        result of uname -r
--> On Linux, this will be the kernel version

And the value of this is?

We have already run into situations where one distro has multiple different kernel versions (the grossest comparison: 2.4 vs. 2.6). This can cause problems, for example, with packages that use threads.

linux_distro:
        redhat (for 8.0, 9)
        fedora

I like "fc"

Longer is better, IMHO. :-)

        suse
        debian
        mandrake (for <= 10.1)
mandriva (for >= 10.2 -- or whenever the name change occurred)
...what should it be for the RH EL family?

I like "redhat"

If we no longer support RH 9, then this is fine.

linux_distro_version:
whatever is appropriate for that distro -- I don't think we
can/should
try to standardize the values. But simpler is good -- e.g., let's use
"2" instead of "Tettnang" -- FC's code name for FC2.

So, from above, "fc" + "2"

OS X has one additional field right now:

machine:
the specific ppc chip number of the box

Significance of this?

No real significance, I guess. I just found a command named "machine" on OSX that returns the PPC chip number and it was too cool to ignore. ;-)

Joking aside, I see it as an extension of the arch field -- there actually are some architecture incompatibilities (e.g., later chips have more capabilities, and you can have apps compiled with specific support for later instructions, etc.). Who knows? The OSX component was really just the template because we were working on my powerbook laptop in Canada. We really need PackMan, DepMan, and node-installer frameworks before any serious work can begin on OSX.
