Hello,

we have done a thing a bit different in our departement: we use an intel 
(Xeon) headnode with opteron slave nodes.
We have installed the opteron linux version on all CPU (intel head node 
and opteron slave nodes) without problems.
Opterons are EM64T enabled so there is no binary problem with executables.
We haven't Itanium, i don't know if an opteron image will work on an 
itanium as well as on Xeon.
Why don't you try to install the current image on  an  opteron  and made 
some test with running executables...
