Have you checked to see if they are running the same BIOS version as the rest of the machines? I have had "identical" machines from the same vendor have radically different bios versions (and occasionally even slightly different hardware).
Also, have you moved to a second switch (or third) when the machines stop working? That switch might not be routing to the head node properly. Also, are you trying to do them all at once or one at a time? Just for the record, what hardware/distro/OSCAR version are you using?
