Except that what somebody of us are looking for is, in fact, the Open Source factor and that's the reason to use an Open source compiler; also, that's the reason we would like to see open specs about things like this, instead of use something like reverse engineering

Of course, if the original creator of the product (aka The Enterprise) prohibits the reverse engineering to its products or formats (I think MS Office did it before) then it can't be helped and It's not legal to do it.

Anyway, competition is good and so It is the systems and platforms interoperability; just as our Elephant friend says
