Fortunately, I guess you don't have to prove that you are not wrong.
It's up to the one suing you to prove that you used the official specs
instead of publicly available informations. Of course it might depends
on the law specific-country but I guess people working on such project
know what they are doing.

Reverse engineering and publicly available documentation give you enough
informations to build a player. It just takes more time.
