Adobe is providing flash players for all major platforms I simply don't see the point of gnash or other open source flash players. I do believe in opening up the swf, flv, rtmp, etc.. and building tools around that (haxe is a great example).
In general, people should have the right to run the content they have created the way they want. Today, when you write content for the Flash Player, you are limited to the platforms that Adobe want to support, and limited by the access they give you to the platform.
Let's say that you have a Flash Game and you want for example to run it on iPhone. If you have an open source flash player, you can bundle both the player and your game together as a single application, and even add APIs to access iPhone-specific things.
Another example is AIR versus SWHX. Both enable you to write desktop Flash applications, but with SWHX you can add extra C libraries to add additional possibilities, such as UDP support, or be able to launch external applications, etc...
Technology should be here to enable you to build content the way you want/need, not to limit you to a limited set of choices, pretending it is for your own sake.
