Perhaps Bryan compiled OpenVRML in Multi-threaded DLL but *Release*? That is probably the default for it. If it is the case, you certainly do want to change that - mixing debug and release libs in one binary is a no-no on Windows - you will get weird crashes and problems if you do so due to a different memory allocation system in the debug libs.
