Two US soldiers killed in âhit and runâ traffic accident in Kuwait

19 December 2004

KUWAIT - Two US soldiers were killed in a âhit and runâ traffic accident
in
Kuwait on Sunday, the US military said, just days after the American embassy
warned of attacks in the Gulf Arab state.
âA second US soldier died as a result of injuries he suffered in a hit and
run traffic accident shortly after arriving at a civilian hospital in Kuwait
today,â the US military said in a statement.
The first soldier died on the spot and two others were evacuated to a
civilian hospital for treatment for injuries, the statement added.
US public affairs officer Peter Pearce said an investigation has been
ordered to find out if the accident was âdeliberate or not.â
The US embassy warned its citizens on Wednesday that âterrorist groupsâ
were preparing to carry out attacks in Kuwait in the near future, urging
Americans to exercise caution and avoid areas where Westerners are known to
congregate.
There are about 25,000 US troops stationed in Kuwait at the Arifjan base,
south of Kuwait City, and several camps in the desert near the borders with
Iraq. In addition, about 12,000 Americans, 9,000 Europeans and 1,000
Australian
civilians live in the country.
A witness told AFP that a vehicle driven by an Egyptian national working in
Kuwait ran into a US military jeep parked on the side of a highway about 40
kilometers (25 miles) south of Kuwait City.
The Egyptian ran away but later turned himself in to police, saying the
accident was not deliberate, a security source said.
